Abstract

The sickle cell disease is a global health problem, in Cuba affects 3,1 % of the population. The main clinical manifestations of this disease are based on the shape and physical properties of SS erythrocytes. In the search for treatments globally accepted has been studied a series of aromatic aldehydes with antipolimerizing activity. We present a study in which through direct evidence of sickling under an optical microscope and using an image analysis system, determine the effect of o-vanillin in the morphology of SS erythrocytes for to two molar ratios, through observation and quantification of morphological variations. It was verified that o-vanillin inhibits the formation of sickle cells at 2 molar ratios, by incubating the cells 24 hours with o-vanillin both molar ratios increases the percentage of normal red blood cells compared to control and reduce the percentages as echinocytes and sickle cell.
Key words: sickle cell disease, o-vanillin, direct evidence of sickling.
