Determination of Atmospheric Fluxes and Concentrations of Heavy Metals and Radionuclides of Environmental Concern in Total Atmospheric Deposition
Abstract
In this paper it has been proposed a methodology for the quantification of concentrations and atmospheric fluxes of radionuclides of environmental concern: 7Be, 210Pb, 40K and 137Cs and heavy metals: Cd, Pb, Ni, Co, Zn, Cr, Fe , Mn, in total atmospheric deposition collected on the Institute of Technology and Applied Sciences at the Quinta de los Molinos, in the period September 2010 to January 2012. Sampling was carried out in a container designed for this purpose. Activity measurements and concentrations of radionuclides were performed Gamma Spectrometry and heavy metal concentrations were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The average concentrations obtained for the radionuclides 210 Pb, 7Be, 40K and 137Cs were: 2,13 Bq g-1, 30,71 Bq g-1, 1,59 Bq g-1, 0,04 Bq g-1 and atmospheric flows were: 167,95 mBq m-2d-1, 2 888,19 mBq m-2d-1, 112,93 mBq m-2d-1 and 2,96 mBqm-2d-1 respectively. The concentrations of the metals shown the following order of deposition: Fe>Mn>Cu> Zn> Pb> Ni> Cr> Co> Cd, obtaining a maximum value of 0,89 mg Fe m-2d-1and a Cd minimum of < 0,001 mg m-2d-1.Keywords: atmospheric deposition, atmospheric flow, activity, concentration.
