Abstract

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are considered persistent organic pollutants in the environment. Due to their toxicity, some of them are classified as carcinogenic to humans. In this work, the procedures corresponding to the US EPA 8100 methodology for the determination of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments, based on gas chromatography analysis after ultrasound-assisted extraction, have been assimilated and internally verified. Method verification was carried out according to NC TS 368: 2010. The method proved to be linear, precise and exact. Once verified, the method was used to study the contamination of sediments from Hanabanilla nab (presence of anthracene, phenanthrene and chrysene of pyrogenic origin was found), as well as at the mouth of Salado and Damují rivers towards the Cienfuegos bay, where seven of the fifteen studied PAHs were found.
