Aspectos económicos y tecnológicos de la producción de sorbitol por vía química

Abstract

El sorbitol es una importante molécula plataforma con aplicaciones en los sectores alimenticios, cosméticos, farmacéuticos y con potencial en biopolímeros. Se obtiene en reactores por lotes a través de la hidrogenación de la glucosa, sobre catalizadores de Ni-Raney. La lixiviación del níquel en el medio de reacción conlleva etapas de purificación y encarece el producto. Este trabajo evalúa el mercado actual y futuro del sorbitol, considerando sus aplicaciones. Además, recopila información sobre el uso de diferentes metales y soportes que ofrezcan mayor selectividad en la obtención del sorbitol a partir de la glucosa o directamente de la celulosa, procedente de residuos de biomasa. Se verificó que el mercado del sorbitol presenta una expectativa de crecimiento superior al 5 % hasta 2022. A pesar de que el catalizador de Ni-Raney es el más competitivo económicamente, puede ser sustituido por el rutenio soportado en diferentes materiales, de forma más eficiente.
