Abstract

This work aimed to identify compounds with antifungal activity against Alternaria porri present in leaf
extracts of French oregano (Plectranthus amboinicus). The crude extract was partitioned consecutively into
hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and sterile distilled water. The bioactivity of the fractions was evaluated
using agar dilution and hanging drop techniques for mycelium and spores, respectively. Compounds were
separated from the most active fractions using column chromatography and thin layer chromatography.
The isolated compounds were analyzed by 1H and 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. The chloroformic
and hexanic fractions were the most active, managing to reduce mycelial growth by about 50 % and inhibit
conidial germination by more than 90 %. From these fractions, seven compounds (flavonoids and terpenoids)
were identified, of which six showed antifungal activity, as did the oil obtained from the hexanic fraction.
