Abstract

This  paper  reports the cross-metathesis degradation of natural rubber  (NR)  with mandarin, lemon and orange oils, and  d-limonene, which were used as chain transfer agents (CTA’s) and green solvents. The reactions were carried out  in presence of the catalyst (PCy3)2(Cl)2Ru  =CHPh  (I). The isoprene oligomers products obtained in the natural rubber degradation showed molecular weights in the order of Mn · 102 and yields about 80 % to 95 %. On the other side, the composition of the products of degradation HN technique using GC/MS (EI) was determined. It was found that the main products were isoprene oligomers with units of m = 2, 3 and 4.

Keywords:  cross-metathesis degradation, natural rubber, essential oils, alkylidene-ruthenium catalyst.
