Highly porous polymeric composite with γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles for oil products sorption
Keywords:
polymeric composite, magnetic nanoparticles, oil sorptionAbstract
A highly porous polymeric nanocomposite was prepared and used as a sorbent for cleaning the water surface from oil products during accidental spills. A highly porous polymer was prepared by polymerizing a dispersion medium of a highly concentrated W/O emulsion consisting of styrene and divinylbenzene. γ-Fe2O3 magnetic nanoparticles, at a concentration up to 25 wt.%, were incorporated into the structure of the highly porous polymer. The addition of γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles did not have a strong influence on the amount of adsorbed transmission oil. The transmission oil sorption was equal to 17,5 – 20,0 g/g. The amount of adsorbed water sharply decreased from 16,4 g/g to 1,4 g/g with the incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles in the composite. When the concentration of γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles was 25 wt.%, the sorption rate of the transmission oil was more than 80 times higher than the water sorption rate.
