Keywords:

The water of the Guaos-Gascón Hydrographic Basin is used by the industries and the population as a waste disposal zone, which affects its natural composition and increases the pollution load that reaches the Bay of Santiago de Cuba. The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in the basin was carried out by applying the matrices proposed by Conesa. These effects on the environment were evaluated based on the results of 27 parameters in eight sampling stations, and the contrast with Cuban regulations, drinkable, supply, fishing and swimming. It was shown that the water of this basin is affected by the discharge of domestic wastewater, industrial waste and solid waste accumulation, being Los Guaos River the greatest pollutant of the basin. The most aggravated environmental factors are health and hygiene, surface waters and landscape.
