Abstract

In this work, a hierarchical A zeolite was synthesized and its adsorption capacity of the model drug ciprofloxacin was evaluated. A natural Cuban clinoptilolite was used for comparison. The synthesis was carried out hydrothermally using rice husk ash as silicon source and a surfactant as template for the generation of mesopores. The results showed that the synthesis method allows to obtain a hierarchical zeolite A with high purity and crystallinity, a particle size of 500 nm and an average pore diameter of 33 nm. The synthesized zeolite showed a ciprofloxacin adsorption capacity (383 mg/g) much higher than that of natural zeolite (73 mg/g), and also higher than that of other adsorbents reported in the literature. These results are promising for the use of the material developed in the removal of drugs in wastewater.
