Exhaustion profile and managemet of the activated carbon for industrial contactors in the cuban rum production
Keywords:
rum; activated carbon; efficiency; spectrophotometry.Abstract
In the present study, the ammonia spectrophotometry method (S-NH 3 ) is applied for the exhaustion
profile characterization of the activated carbon in fixed bed industrial contactors used in the aged
aguardiente refining process for Cuban rum production. The exhaustion profile of industrial
contactors (confirmed as “out of service”) from four Cuban rum factories were determined. Based on
calculations and mathematical modelling of the profiles, the overall effectiveness in the carbon
management was compared between rum factories. In addition, the recovering strategy of the less
exhausted carbon layers into the contactor allows increasing the exploitation efficiency for this costly
material for the Cuban rum industry.
