Synthesis of Sic-Al 2O3 Ceramic Composite Via SHS-AE Using Soda Lime Glass as Silicon Source
Abstract
This paper show the experimental results using calcium sodium glass and charcoal as a source of raw materials for obtaining SiC-Al2O3 ceramic composite by aluminothermic process with assistance of the electric arc energy (SHS-EA). It’s use electric arc furnace with an inert atmosphere for the reduction of SiO2 in glass with aluminum. The combination of the energy of the exothermic reaction of aluminum with the electric arc can exceed the threshold of activation energy and thermodynamic conditions favorable (∆G <0), providing technical criteria in terms of energy consumption, performance and impact the environment. From stoichiometric ratios of the raw materials involved, the synthesis was carried out reaching a temperature above 2 000 K forming the SiC-Al2O3 ceramic composite. The samples were characterized by XRD and SEM-EDX confirming the simultaneous acquisition of β-SiC and α-Al2O3.Keywords: glass, SiC-Al2O3, SHS-EA.
