Antimicrobial evaluation of the aqueous extract of the biomass of the microalga Phorphyridium cruentum

Microalgae have proven to have multiple applications in the biotechnology industry. Porphyridium cruentum is a microalgae that exhibits a wide content of polysaccharides and proteins with potential pharmacological activity. This work evaluates the antimicrobial activity of the P. cruentum biomass against the parasites Leishmania infantum, Trypanosoma rhodesiense, Trypanosoma cruzi, and Trypanosoma brucei through the microdilution method in plates, as well as the cytotoxicity in leukocyte cell lines, using as a drug reference Tamoxifen. The biomass showed inhibitory activity against the parasites T. brucei, T. rhodesiensis, and T. cruzi. The study also demonstrated that the biomass does not exert cytotoxic activity on THP-1 human monocytes and RAW 264.7 murine macrophages. The results obtained indicate that the active compounds present in Porphyridium cruentum could be considered as possible antimicrobial candidates.
